The "Oceanea" EP is the second collection from his upcoming album "The Map of the Floating City". It's a foretaste of his first studio album in over a decade, and like "Amerikana" before it, the songs it contains show that in his musical hiatus he's become better than ever. Like "Amerikana" the songs seem to be excerpts from a musical voyage, one that's positively cinematic in scope. All three tracks stand worthy of comparison with his best work. Oceanea's title track is one of the few pieces of music that can move me to tears when I hear it; it's a song of homecoming and loss with vocals by Mr D and Eddi Reader. (Is it the end of the voyage, or a beginning?) "Simone" is film noir for the ears, complete with a Theremin performance by The Camera Club's Bruce Woolley, and "To The Lifeboats" is addressed to Caroline, a name that brings back memories of that first album, years ago.

I never heard of this band, but I saw the album in my local record store and was intrigued by the cover art. When I arrived home, I immediately went to Amazon.com and listened to some snippets of the songs. They sounded good, but it's hard to get a feel for an entire album just by listening to 30 second clips. So I went ahead and bought the album.

I gave it a once-through. Then a second-through. Then a third-through... I've been listening to this album for about 5 days in a row now and it just gets better every time. The editorial reviewer complained about the variety on the album, but I believe that's one of the strengths. There's definitely something for everyone in this album.

I listen to a lot of indie-rock and this is definitely one of the top albums that has come out in the last few years. I rank it up there with Boxer by The National, Neon Bible by the Arcade Fire, and 23 by Blonde Redhead to name a few. Suffice it to say that this album is definitely in good company.

Now I know this album was released on Columbia, which means it's not necessarily "Indie"... But it was definitely crafted with the indie crowd in mind. This album flows really well, changing pace from roaring, slamming on the banjo fast to soft, slow, sitting in front of a window as it rains and you sip a cup of earl grey. Every song on this album is a masterpiece and truly unique. The first single, of course, Little Lion Man, possibly stands out as the best. I certainly love it. As far as the slower tempo songs, I'd say I Gave You All stands out with a raw, gripping, sadness stirred rage.

One problem: when you buy the MP3 version and listen to them on the "Cloud Player" - the composer's name is nowhere to be found. The bitrates vary between 186 and 242 Kbps, a little on the low side, but the sound is still pretty good. One complaint is a lack of sound leveling between tracks. If you turn up the sound on a quiet track you might well get blasted out on the next one -- not conducive to relaxation! Attention to that kind of detail would have been going the extra mile.
